Learning to Breastfeed

Breastfeeding is a skill that both mother and baby need to learn with the right support at the right time.

"Breastfeeding is one of the most enjoyable and transformative aspects of motherhood"

Miriam Main IBCLC

Miriam is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). The IBCLC credential is the highest-regarded professional qualification in breastfeeding knowledge and support, recognised all over the world.  Prior to sitting the rigorous exams, candidates are usually already accredited as breastfeeding counsellors, midwives or health visitors and have additional, extensive and advanced training in breastfeeding and lactation issues. To sit the exam, they must also have at least 1,000 hours of proven clinical experience, working with breastfeeding mothers and babies. Working together with mothers, families, policymakers and society, IBCLC certificants provide expert breastfeeding and lactation care, promote changes that support breastfeeding and help reduce the risks of not breastfeeding.

Miriam is extremely passionate about supporting mothers and advocating for babies. Her genuine compassion, love and understanding will guide you in the best direction for your unique situation.

As an IBCLC, Miriam can provide expert help with the following:

  • Positioning and attachment (i.e. "the latch")
  • Sore nipples and painful breasts during or between feeds
  • Slow weight gain in baby
  • Low milk supply
  • Relactation
  • Combination feeding, or switching from combination to fully breastfed
  • Complete oral assessment, including tongue tie assessment and referral
  • Fussy or unhappy baby
  • Mastitis
  • Thrush
  • Expressing milk
  • Knowing normal patterns of feeding, 24/7
  • Night time breastfeeding
  • Premature babies
  • Twins and multiples

Please note that an IBCLC can't diagnose medical conditions such as ankyloglossia (tongue tie), but can perform a thorough assessment and refer you to the correct medical professional.

Services and Pricing
Breastfeeding is one of the most enjoyable and transformative aspects of motherhood. It is also a skill that both mother and baby need to learn with the right support at the right time. Almost every mother I know wishes they had prepared as well for breastfeeding as they did for birth!

I can visit you at home for antenatal consultations, and postnatal consultations (for any age of baby - from newborn to toddlerhood and beyond). Alternatively I can also offer online consultations if you prefer.

I will always advocate for you and your baby, I will listen to your concerns with compassion and understanding, and I will make a realistic, practical plan to move forwards.
